Sunday School lessons with Godly Play
@ North Scottsdale United Methodist Church

We have two amazingly-wonderful teachers in our 2 and 3 year old classroom. They are teaching Godly Play right along with all of our Sunday School classrooms. Teaching spirituality at young age is developmentally appropriate and important to help nurture lifelong learners.

Godly Play curriculum and manipulatives offer an imaginative approach for telling scripture stories that invite children to wonder about themselves, God and the world in a way that is playful and meaningful to the children. This curriculum is based on the Montessori teaching method.   Godly Play outlines specific storytelling techniques and use of story figures that encourage children to respond through a variety of creative activities. This method is greatly respectful of the innate spirituality of children and encourages them to use their curiosity and imagination to experience the mystery and joy of God.

North Scottsdale UMC has redesigned and designated two classrooms specifically for this opportunity.  The classrooms include a liturgical calendar, wooden figurines, worship area, arts and craft center.  The Godly Play experience begins with a storyteller presenting the scripture with wooden figurines.  After the interactive presentation the students have the option to retell the story with the figurines, clay, paints, puzzles and/or crafts.  This style of presenting scripture through children friendly worship allows children to place themselves in the story so they can understand it and retell it.

The Godly Play stories are told to the students following Children's Moments which occurs approximately ten minutes into the service.  Once Children's Moments end, all children proceed to their respective Godly Play atrium with their teachers. As the storyteller finishes the scripture story, the children are invited to their classroom to recreate the story in a meaningful and creative way.

North Scottsdale United Methodist Church celebrates the love of God through Christ child by having two services on Sunday (8:30 am and 10:00 am) plus Sunday school classes for children and youth.  Other children and youth activities include; children’s choir, Creative Christians after school class, youth band, volleyball, mission trips, small groups, festivals, carnivals, preschool and youth groups.  North Scottsdale U.M.C. also offers adult Bible studies, men and women’s groups, choirs, retreats, holiday events, turn-around trips, mission trips and more.
