Sunday Adult Book Study
Adult Sunday Book Study
8:30am beginning Oct. 1st, 2017
NEW ADULT Sunday Morning Class begins October 1st, 2017 at the 8:30 am. The class is open to all adults ages 18+ and it is free to attend. The class will meet weekly in the bridal room which is located in the church lobby.
The study will use the book, Speaking Christian, by Dr. Marcus Borg. It is an excellent study because Borg looks at all the fundamental aspects of theology. Chapter headings are: Salvation, The Bible, God, God’s Character, Jesus, The Death of Jesus, Easter, Faith, Mercy, Righteousness, Sin, Forgiveness, John 3:16, Born Again, I Am The Only Way, Pentecost, Heaven. Not only does Borg look at these basics of the faith he does so by re-examining them by looking back at the meaning of the words in their original languages. The book also reviews what these theologies were in their earliest expressions, and how they have been changed over the years and how today’s interpretations are often not even close to their original meanings. It is a scholarly study of the basics of the faith. Previous classes are needed and you may join the class at any time (it doesn’t matter if you miss a class or begin after the first class).
This class will be a great way to begin your Sunday morning and will still leave you time to attend the 10:00 am worship service. The class will be led by the Rev. George Cushman. Cushman is a retired Methodist pastor with over 40 years of amazing service to thousands of people. NSUMC is so blessed to have him attending the church now that he has retired. If you have any questions about the class please call the church office and ask for Pastor George.

"Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power—And How They Can Be Restored" book review:
In Speaking Christian, acclaimed Bible scholar Marcus Borg, author of Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, argues that the very language Christians use has become dangerously distilled, distorted, and disconnected from the beliefs which once underpinned it.
Stating a case that will resonate with readers of N. T. Wright’s Simply Christian, Borg calls for a radical change to the language we use to invoke our beliefs—the only remedy that will allow the Church's words to once again ring with truth, power, and hope.
