Rare Bear Sew-in 2020

Last year our Piecemakers quilters joined  forces  with  RARE Science, Inc., a  non-profit organization that helps find cures for kids with rare dis-eases, and made 50 one of a kind bears for special one of a kind kids. Gifted RARE bears have a serial number specifically made for a child in our program. There are millions of children with rare diseases. Since these diseases are not normally the focus, these children are often misdiagnosed and/or do not have medicines available for them. 30% of these children die before their 5th birthday. RARE Science believes and have already demonstrated that by empowering Parents and Foundations with tools to navigate the healthcare system, build patient communities and clinical/research teams focused on these diseases, we can accelerate finding more immediate treatments.

The philosophy at RARE Science is that alone we all can make great contributions to our community but together we can make transformative change! Although all the bears will be made to specified guidelines and pattern, it is the contribution of each team members stash” and donations that make each bear unique. Be a part of the RARE Bear Army!

Please join our Piecemakers quilters at our Rare Bear Sew-in on March 19, 2020, at NSUMC from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. Patterns will be provided. Please register with Rare Science for your personalized serial number and material for their feet at:https://www.rarescience.org/rarebear -program/rarebeararmysignup/

Contact Vickie Johnson via email to RSVP for this event at office@nsumc.com.

Rare Bear "Sew-In" hosted by N.S.U.M.C. Peacemakers 2019

This year our Piecemakers are planning a “sew-in” on Thursday, March 21, 2019, starting at 9:00 a.m.  Each person will make their own bear.  If you would like to participate in this year’s event, please register with Rare Science by clicking on the link below.  Rare Bears will send each registrant material for the bear’s feet and a serial number tag to be attached to the bear.  Copies of the pattern will be provided for each person at the sew-in. If you plan to participate, please let Vickie Johnson know by email at vwessel@gmail.com.  This will ensure we have enough copies of the pattern for all who attend.  Register now!

Help us make bears for children! Here's how and why...

There are about 200 Million kids in the world with rare disease of which 30% die before their 5th birthday. The RARE Bear Program plays an instrumental role in patient family support and providing solutions that can change these statistics. The notes the get back once a bear is received show that the kids and families can feel the love and hope that the seamstresses have  put into each stitch. In addition, the RARE Bears help researchers with patient outreach, education and awareness to improve early diagnosis and support of this program to help accelerate finding cures for kids with rare disease.

Dedicated volunteers sew each bear, and mail them to the organization unstuffed. At their headquarters, they have more volunteers that fill the bears with soft stuffing, then sew the seams closed, along with packing and shipping the bears to children around the world! For each of the amazing RARE Bear makers, they will send a picture of the child with their gifted bear that they made.

Success!!!

Thanks to the combined effort of the Piecemakers quilt group and the North Scottsdale United Methodist Women 50 unique bears have been created. This was no small feat. These 50 bears required over 1,000 pieces to be cut and sewn. It would not have been possible without all of the women who cut, ironed and stitched for the last three months. These bears will be mailed to a central distribution center where they will be stuffed and given to children with rare diseases.

UPDATE
One bear completed! 49 to go. That's over 1000 pieces to cut and sew. If you would like to help.
